Pigalle
Those of you who did well in high-school French might get excited when you hear the name of this West Side bistro. While Eighth Ave. might have resembled a Red Light District 20 years ago, it doesn’t now, and neither does Pigalle, especially since it’s no longer open 24 hours a day (it was the first few years). The stamped-tile circular ceiling, rounded leather booths, frosted glass, and generic French posters scream bistro, not brothel, as does the brunch-friendly menu with egg options aplenty and French favorites like escargot in garlic butter and mussels mariniere. The zinc-topped bar is straight from France, and French doors open up for sidewalk seating in warmer months. Hey, it’s not the Champs-Elysées, but it’s as close as you’re gonna get in Hell’s Kitchen.
