D'Or: The gilded age of nightlife may very well be upon us. Not too long after the opening of SoHo’s GoldBar, D’Or ("of gold" in French), is the latest foray into the “precious-metal” genre. Located in the basement of the recently opened Amalia restaurant (inside the Dream Hotel), D’Or is a cavernous space (one might say a scenier version of the Batcave) aimed at attracting the younger, hipper set to this trendy midtown location (whether or not it succeeds at this remains to be seen). Features include a "floating" staircase entrance, Rococo-esque artwork, crystal chandeliers, and modern design. But despite all this effort, will midtown ever be downtown? We’re doubtful, but we’ll still enjoy the great drinks.
