Apiary: In the land formerly known as Greenwich Village, now called “NYU,” an upscale spot is opening tonnight on a Third Avenue block better known for its skull-embroidered socks, pita pockets, and fro-yo than wine-and-food pairings. Though many of the new restos that set up shop here did so in response to the news that NYU was building yet another dorm in the area, we have to assume this one's for the deep-pocketed parents. Named for the yards where beehives are kept, Apiary's menu includes an heirloom tomato crostini ($12), slow cooked rabbit ($28), spice crusted lamb with fried hummus ($29), and goat cheesecake with lavender honey ($9). Chef Neil Manacle, Bobby Flay's right hand man at Bolo, Mesa Grill, and Bar Americain for 16 years, is in the kitchen, and the dining room was designed by French furniture maker Ligne Roset—you know, that fancy furniture store on Park Avenue South. Look for a drink menu by consulting partner Nick Mautone, formerly of Gramercy Tavern. Weekend brunch and Sunday dinner will start in September—just in time to hit up Mom and Dad for that buzz-worthy meal.
