Ago: Robert DeNiro’s new Italian spot may look romantic, but the prices won’t remind you of Little Italy. Ago, on the ground floor of The Greenwich Hotel, Bobby D’s latest venture in his Tribeca takeover, is an elegant statement of dark wood beams, exposed brick, an open kitchen, and huge picture windows overlooking the street. Chef Agostino Sciandri’s authentic Tuscan entrees range from $30-$45, perhaps because of the hotel setting and celebrity factor, but in return, expect large portions and meticulous service from the mostly Italian staff. No doubt vino is the drink of choice here—more than 600 bottles are available, the ceiling’s covered with 90,000 wine corks, and dinner is also served at the half-moon marble bar. Though the restaurant supposedly drew legions of “real” Italians to the opening, the crowd has already morphed to include escapees from the nearby Financial District, making for a scene that’s boisterous even by Italian standards. |
